Mercury, which is the smallest of the planets, is the closest to the sun at a little more than
one-third of the Earth's distance. ---- . It was first visited In March 1974 by the spacecraft
Mariner 10 which passed within a few hundred kilometres of it. The craft relayed pictures on
the two following passes in September 1974 and March 1975. It still continues to revisit
Mercury every 176 days.

The relayed picture showed that the planet has an approximately 59-day rotation period

It is only recently that we have been able to gain any accurate information about it

Mariner 10 measured a small magnetic field at the surface

Today we are in possession of vast amounts of information about the planets

Obviously it will take many thousands of years to reach even the nearest stars
