During the middle ages, Venice flourished greatly as her trade expanded---- . At that time,
she not only controlled the main trade route between East and West, but she also built
up a considerable empire on the mainland of Italy and down the Adriatic Coast, including
parts of Greece. Apart from the Ottoman Empire, there was no other power to challenge
her.
Furthermore, the city was originally founded by refugees who had fled here from the attacks

decline.
