- (I)Unlike today the one room schoolhouse was common in the 1800's. (II) As we can understand from its name the one room schoolhouse had one room. (III) Back then, kids walked to school so they built schools close by.(IV) Therefore it had only one teacher who taught all grades within this classroom. (V) The small room usually had one stove at the back of the room and two windows on the each side of the building depending on how wealthy the community was.
