reason for a windshield because the car's
speed was so slow that there wasn't any wind.
(II) It took almost fifty years before the industry
began to develop safety glass that didn't shatter
on impact. (III) As speeds increased, a circular
piece of glass in a frame was placed in front of
the driver, but the other passengers were
encouraged to wear goggles. (IV) It wasn't until
cars began to become closed vehicles with
glass all round for visibility that the windshield
started to look something like it does today. (V)
Even then, many windshields were more like
windows and were designed to be opened to let
in air.
