- (I) Though the official language is English,
some words were picked up from the speech of
the native aborigines in Australia. (II) 'Happy as
Larry' is an Australian-British phrase that simply
means 'extremely happy' or Very pleased'. (III)
Unfortunately, there is practically no reliable
information about the origin of the saying. (IV) It
seems to have been in use in Australia around
the end of the 19th century. (V) The leading
theory is that the phrase originally applied to the
Australian boxer, Larry Foley, but nobody
seems to know if, why or when he was so
happy.
