older, she is becoming less able to look
after her large house. You are sure she
needs help, but she is fiercely
independent and very sensitive to any
implication that she can't cope. Making
your suggestion gently and tactfully,
you say:

You know, a lot of old people would
be grateful for help, so you are
being a bit unreasonable.

I know you don't want a cleaner, so
I'll have to come in every day and
help you myself.

I'm sure you think you can cope
but you must accept that a cleaner
would do a better job.

Why don't you come and stay with
me? Then you wouldn't have any
housework to do at all.

Perhaps if someone came to do just
the cleaning Jobs, then you would
have more time for your hobbles.
