You've been having problems with your
car. You take it to a garage and they
give you a very high quote for doing the
work, so you decide to try to repair it
yourself. You spend the whole weekend
working on the car, but eventually you
manage to sort out the problem.
Afterwards, you tell your father what
happened, saying proudly:

I wish I could afford to buy a car that
doesn't need repairing all the time.

I wasted my whole weekend repairing
the car and now I'm exhausted.

If I'd known how much work it was
going to be, I wouldn't have done it.

I fixed it all by myself and didn't have
to pay the mechanic a penny.
