Commonwealth today were once colonies of the
British Empire. Many of the larger ones are now
independent, ………, and Britain is still
responsible for their government and defense.

though this independence took
many years and, I in some cases,
much bloodshed, to be achieved

but there are still a great number of
territories and islands either too
small or too weak to govern
themselves

therefore, they maintain close links
with Britain and continue to
recognise the position of the
monarch

so their connections with Britain
now exist only through the
commonwealth conferences rind
sporting events such as the
Commonwealth Games

and several of this independent countries are
seeking further to sever the ties by declaring
themselves as republics
