(I) In the year AD 79, the people of
Pompeii were starting the day in the usual
way. (II) Suddenly, it grew dark and they
saw a great cloud was leaving the top of
Mount Vesuvius. (III) They realised, in
horror, that Vesuvius was erupting. (IV)
Even volcanoes, however, which seemed
to be extinct have erupted. (V) They all
started to run out of the town, but they
couldn't, for the town was soon completely
buried under stones and cinder.
